Carrie by Stephen King
After 25 years, I finally sat down and read a Stephen King Novel. I have to say...it lived up to the hype!
Since the Borderline Millennials Book Club needed an October novel, Carrie by Stephen King was a clear choice. We started a little late, but it still worked well for the spooky season. We divided this book into three, incredibly well-thought-out sections, and flew through this book.
I was so enthralled! Way more enthralled than I was when I read Dune by Frank Herbert. Sorry, not sorry. :’(
But yes, this book lived up to all the hype! I read this book so quickly (when I finally had time to sit down and read it). Everyone was right when they said that Stephen King is one of the greatest authors of all time. The way he wrote Carrie was so impressive and enticing. Y’all know about my boy Stephen already so let me get into the book.
Before reading this book, I had a general idea about what it was because I’ve seen bits and pieces of the 2013 Carrie film featuring Chloe Grace Moretz. From what I can remember, that movie wasn’t very well done, but I was able to get basic plot points like Carrie is the star, she has telekinesis, and she gets a bucket of blood dropped on her while at prom. While I was right in my knowledge of the book, there was so much more to it than I had thought.
Right from the jump, Carrie had me intrigued. The first major scene of this book had me stressed in the best way. I kept that feeling throughout the entire book. There was a great balance of getting small spoilers and sneak peeks into the future and keeping suspense, which is really hard to do (I’m looking at you again, Dune). I developed a love-hate relationship with most of the characters in the book, Carrie included. I felt that there was great action throughout the book and it was exciting to read it! I’ve said it before, but I’m going to say it again, I need to read more fiction!
If you couldn’t tell already, I’m recommending this book and giving it five gold stars. I think it’s a fantastic suspenseful book with incredibly strong female energy and everyone should read at least one Stephen King novel in their lifetime.
